What to Wear, Bring & Leave Behind

The Ultimate Women’s Safari Packing Guide

Planning your dream African safari with the Suitcase Gals? Whether you're heading to Kenya, Tanzania, or beyond, packing smart is essential for staying comfortable, stylish, and safe. From dusty savannahs to crisp crater mornings, here’s your no-stress packing guide, curated with female travelers in mind.

When flying to Africa for your safari adventure, comfort is key — especially for long-haul flights. Opt for comfy stretch pants or joggers that allow easy movement and keep you relaxed. Pair them with a layered tee and a long sleeve top so you can adjust to varying cabin temperatures. A cozy wrap or travel blanket is perfect for added warmth and doubles as a pillow or cover during naps. Don’t forget compression socks to help with circulation and reduce swelling during the flight. Lastly, slip-on shoes make airport security a breeze and provide ease when your feet inevitably swell at altitude.

Most safari camps offer 48-hr laundry turnaround (often hand-washed, line-dried). Some will not launder ladies’ undergarments—pack travel soap or quick-wash packets.

What to Pack: Safari Essentials

Soft-sided luggage: Hard-shell suitcases and wheels aren’t allowed on bush planes. Pack light—many camps offer laundry service.
Sports bra: You’re not jogging, but those bumpy game drives call for serious support.
Utility pants with pockets: Great for carrying lip balm, bug spray, and your phone.
Cotton layers: Long-sleeve shirts for sun and bug protection. Layer up—mornings can be chilly and afternoons warm.
Closed-toe shoes: Think worn-in hiking boots or trail shoes. Save the sandals for the lodge.
Microfiber cloth: Dust is everywhere—your glasses and camera will thank you.
Sun protection: Sunscreen, lip balm with SPF, a wide-brimmed hat with a strap, and polarized sunglasses are musts.
Bug spray with DEET: Mosquitoes and midges are no joke.
Small backpack or belt bag: For your essentials during game drives.
Scarf or neck gaiter: Use as a dust shield, sun cover, or stylish layer.
Swimwear: Yes—many safari lodges have beautiful pools!
Flashlight or headlamp: Useful for tented camps and early mornings.
Earplugs: Hyenas, frogs, and hippos are part of the nighttime concert.
Binoculars: Some lodges supply them, but having your own is best for quick sightings.
Reusable tote: Plastic bags are banned in many countries, so a foldable tote is perfect for market days or camera gear.
Plug adapter: Kenya and Tanzania use British Type G sockets. Bring a universal adapter just in case.

Whether this is your first safari or your fifth, traveling through Africa with the Suitcase Gals is about more than just seeing wildlife — it’s about discovering new parts of yourself, connecting with a powerful sisterhood, and experiencing the raw, breathtaking beauty of the wild. With the right preparation, an open heart, and a sense of adventure, you’re sure to return home with unforgettable memories, new friendships, and stories you’ll tell.

Pack light—you’ll rewear and rotate.

Ready to come home dusty, happy, and changed forever
